Here in Quebec called community credit, this approach was born by Mohammad Yunus, originally from Bangladesh, who founded in 1976 the first micro-credit organization baptized Grameen. Seven year later, in 1983, the organization obtained its status as a banking establishment, the Grameen Bank.

Quebec community credit

In Quebec, micro-credit appeared on the economic landscape at the beginning of the 1990's under a very special approach, community credit.

It is in this movement that the Fonds communautaire d'accès au micro-crédit was created in 199. Existing first in the form of a loan circle, then becoming a community loan fund, the FCAMC responded to the ever-growing demand coming from persons marginalized by their financial situation. So, in its mission to combat poverty and economic exclusion, the FCAMC offers to these persons a close accompaniment to improve their business plan and support them in their project, as well as financing in the form of micro-credit, and that, with the goal to start-up their own enterprise or become self-employed.

The Réseau québécois du crédit communautaire (RQCC)

The Réseau québécois du crédit communautaire (RQCC) comprises twenty members, nine (9) community loan funds and eleven (11) lending circles. These organisations are operational in eleven of the province's administrative regions, and the diverse approaches illustrate each region's unique needs and the resources available to meet them. Community credit approaches are similar to those of microcredit, which is a widely known development strategy implemented in all continents. RQCC is a strong network committed to advocating joint initiatives and responsible entrepreneurship (a tool for fighting exclusion and poverty). It is Quebec's community credit center of expertise and the only accredited advocate for community credit institutions in Quebec.

Together we succeed...

During the Annual General Meeting, the president of the FCAMC, Mr. Martin Gauthier, thanked all the participants, elected officials and promoters who contribute to build our economy. He praised the involvement of the board of directors, the loan committee and the support of these loyal allies as well as the great work of the permanent employees. "Today, the services of the FCAMC are perceived as one of the important tools of economic development for the region", he said.

The results of the last financial exercise period of the FCAMC are very encouraging and confirm that the needs are still present. Clients are requesting more and more of our services and this clientele is represented now in a proportion of about 14% Anglophone and 86% Francophone, that, thanks to the partnership agreement with Canada Economic Development (CED).
